Priority Programs

The BCMS Students Alumni Association, which leads health priority programs, has a strong focus on eliminating health disparities and creating fair opportunities for Liberians to live healthy lives. Addressing social and economic issues is vital for Liberia to enhance health equity, overall health, its health system, and chronic disease management. We aim to improve public health by enhancing living conditions, providing universal access to resources, and establishing a just, robust public health system. We intend will build a healthier tomorrow for everyone.

Our health priority programs provide a wider view to improve health strategies for individuals, communities, and organizations, enhancing timely, efficient health delivery for all ages in both urban and rural areas in Liberia.

Liberians are Living Shorter but Sicker Lives

Liberians are living shorter but sicker lives. Life expectancy at birth (59-62 years) stayed fairly consistent from 2015 to 2023. In 2023, the World Bank (2025) reported a 63-year lifespan for women and a 61-year lifespan for men                           . The WHO (2024) data listed the primary health indicators (LHIs) of death causes for women                                                               .  To improve public health, we will work with health organizations. We will examine the extent to which social and economic problems are key health risks across age groups in Liberia. Addressing these key factors related to social and environmental issues is important in Liberia.

Achieve Health Equity and Improve Health Status

  • Reduce Disparities: We will explore the reasons for health disparities across groups. Addressing poverty and poor sanitation can help decrease these inequalities.

  • Promote Wellbeing: We will work together, connect, and include groups, coalitions, leaders, and members to own their health. By improving conditions such as housing and food, we can improve health and prevent disease.

  • Tackle Malnutrition: Malnutrition is common in Liberia, particularly among children, which raises the chances of death from everyday diseases. Addressing food insecurity is critical to child health and development.

Reinforce the Health System in Liberia

  • Build Trust: We will partner with various groups to meet social needs and build trust.

  • Improve Access to Care: We will keep concentrating on issues such as poverty and transportation limitations, which significantly hinder healthcare access. Improving these conditions, as well as constructing better infrastructure, will lead to increased service use.

  • Preventing Complications: Enhancing SDOH increases the likelihood of individuals following treatment, thus preventing issues and lessening chronic illness on both individuals and the healthcare system.

  • Resource Allocation: Focusing on SDOH allows for tailored interventions, maximizing resources in Liberia, which has limited health funding.

  • Improve Access to Care: We will keep concentrating on issues such as poverty and transportation limitations, which significantly hinder healthcare access. Improving these conditions, as well as constructing better infrastructure, will lead to increased service use.

Manage Chronic Diseases More Effectively

  • Address Root Causes: We will examine the connection between chronic illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease, and bad diets and places where it’s hard to be active.

  • Enable Self-Management: We will assess, evaluate, and monitor people with chronic conditions needing more than medical care.

  • Preventing Complications: Enhancing SDOH increases the likelihood of individuals following treatment, thus preventing issues and lessening chronic illness on both individuals and the healthcare system.

Building a Healthier Community and Healthier People Together

  • We will teach the community ways to stay healthy and avoid getting ill. Our resources will help local health needs as we mentor students aiming for healthcare careers in Liberia's underserved regions.

  • We will work to identify unequal access based on wealth and education, and logistical hurdles for community health workers. Stronger community leadership, improved cross-sector coordination, and long-term funding are vital for health and WASH services.

  • We will provide community health workers (CHWs) with proper training, motivation, and logistical support.

  • To ensure a safe environment without crime or substance misuse, our social support teams have to evaluate at-risk groups and diminish violence.
