Crime and Violence in Liberia

Liberia grapples with crime and violence, such as armed robbery and sexual assault, and also faces increasing organized crime and youth gangs. Contributing elements are poverty, a civil war history, and a poor justice system. Gender-based violence is also prevalent, and despite government efforts, corruption and resource shortages hinder progress.

Common crimes and violence

  • Petty crime, such as pick-pocketing, is common in crowded areas, while more serious offenses like armed robbery, assault, and vehicle theft are frequent, particularly in urban centers.

  • Gender-based violence, including domestic and sexual assault, is prevalent.

  • outh gangs are a growing problem, especially in urban areas like Monrovia. Gangs provide a sense of belonging, and criminal networks or politicians hire for illicit activities.

  • Crime is significantly more prevalent after dark, and armed home break-ins are common in the capital and surrounding areas.

Contributing factors

  • Economic instability, poverty, and unemployment largely fueled crime.

  • Serious crime is not being addressed effectively by the police because of a lack of resources.

  • Public mistrust of the police and courts can cause citizens to become vigilantes.

  • Government corruption leads to both hampered crime-fighting and impunity.
