Reducing the Number of New HIV Infections

The BCMS Students' Alumni Association is involved in community support and efforts to create awareness about human-to-human HIV transmission and gather data based on demographic and geographic mapping of areas at high risk for HIV transmission in Liberia. Lowering HIV infections in Liberia requires addressing factors such as gender, ethnicity, income, education, age, marital status, cohabitation, and birthplace.

Moreso, the BCMS Students’ Alumni Association will implement national and subnational HIV surveillance systems to classify HIV infection increases or decreases across all population levels to identify HIV infection hotspots in Liberia.

National baseline: 36,000 people over 15 years old were infected with HIV in 2024. 2,085 new HIV infections occurred in 2024                   .

National target: 2,500 people

Numerator

The estimated new HIV infections this year are among those 15 and older.

Methodology

Methodology notes

The estimates will use information from the 17 counties' HIV surveillance data for people 15+. BCMS Hotspots Surveillance Mapping will determine HIV incidence: HIV Incidence and Prevalence in Liberia in 2026 and 2030.
