Diabetes

Diabetes is a long-term illness that impairs sugar processing, potentially causing severe issues such as kidney disease, vision impairment, and nerve damage without treatment. Despite being lifelong, it can be managed with support and changes. Adopting a healthy lifestyle, with more exercise, a good diet, and weight loss, can lower the chance of getting Type 2 diabetes                         .

Understanding Diabetes

  • What it is: Diabetes is a chronic illness where the body struggles with insulin, leading to excess blood sugar.

  • Types of Diabetes: Chronic diabetes has two main types: type 1 and type 2. Gestational diabetes also occurs during pregnancy.

  • Complications: Serious health issues, such as heart disease, stroke, and nerve damage (especially in the feet), can result from consistently high blood sugar.

  • Support: People with diabetes can access an array of support systems and resources.

What will we do?

The BCMS Students Alumni Association will run community programs to help fight the health risks of diabetes. These programs will use their network to focus on awareness, education, and support across all ages. The BCMS Students Alumni Association will partner with local health systems and community leaders. The goal is to adapt solutions for societal change through medical care, lifestyle adjustments, and self-monitoring.

Managing and preventing type 2 diabetes.

  • Lifestyle changes: Lifestyle changes are the most effective way to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.

  • Exercise: Strive for a minimum of 150 minutes weekly of moderate physical activity.

  • Diet: Eat a healthy diet; that means less sugar and unhealthy fats.

  • Weight: A healthy weight helps decrease your risk significantly.
